A 14 year-old CIT Staff member was killed at Tifie Scout Camp at the Mountain Dell Scout Ranch Tuesday night. He died at 8:33 PM
-Tuesday Night - A Scouts Story - We were eating dinner when this guy drove up in a 4-Wheeler and told us to go on the road that goes around the scout camp. we had no idea why and he didn't tell us. our initial reaction, one of our leaders said, was to not go. but we went anyway. on the way, we asked a CIT (Counselor in Training) what was happening. he said that someone got hit and they were landing Life-Flight in the field, so they needed everyone out of the way. that was good enough for us, so we went with everyone else. they had us hike All the way around the camp to the lodge, than sent us down to the parking lot, and finally up to the Johnson Amphitheater, where a guy was telling stories. they wouldn't, however, let us go back to our campsites, not even to get our coats! but they did let us go to the restrooms. when I was down there, i heard someone say "I saw the body, thats right, I said the body." with tears in his eyes he said "I don't think he's gonna make it."When i got back it got freezing, and everyone was huddling and hugging the ground for warmth when they said something like this "We have received word that we can't go back to the campsites yet, and we know you are getting cold and impatient, so we are going to have some skits to try and entertain you." about a minute later, they came and said something like this. " All the campsites below eagle can now return back to their campsites. sadly we have had a fatality, so that's why it took so long. if you are in ..... Eagle, or Centaur, than, once everyone else has left, come up here to this middle front area, and we'll have a little chat." we got to go back to camp, had dinner and went to bed. when i woke up, our camp friend was there, and everyone was getting ready to go to Flag Ceremony for the tribute. i shoveled in some breakfast, and went to join them. at Flag, they put the flag at half mast, and did a three gun salute for a tribute. i think they did the salute with 22' Rifles.
-Wednesday Release-
Wednesday morning, we found out that the person who died was Bruce Rhiddlehoover. he had died while doing his nightly assignment of collecting trash. it appears that he slipped under the truck and got run over. Life Flight as well as an Ambulance were called. Sadly, he passed away at 8:33 pm on Tuesday, July Ninth.
